New Experiment

Having a disablity and or other problem is something common throughout the world. However this is something that I never thought I would experienced. I personally have never lived with a disability that has left me without my senses. Earlier last week on my last day of my CNA class, I got the oppertunity to try something completely new. My instructor had in a sense, taken away my senses. I had goggles on my eyes with very little sight to be seen, headphones that cancelled sounds and made echos of voices in my ears, noodles in my shoes, and one of my biggest fears; the ability to touch with my hand. Gloves covered my hands and a splint was put in on my dominant hand to take away my movement. I was given five tasks to complete with no clue of what was in the room or where things were in the room. Before entering the room I was given the five task, while impaired. Due to the fact I can read lips very easy, I read her lips like a book and put the tasks in my photogenic mind. P.S. the room was completely dark.

(below will be a short synapse of what they were and how they went).

First: Put on a white coat.

This task was quite easy for me. As I looked around the room I instantly saw a coat rack. I closed one eye to enhance my vision. (One eye hole was higher than the other so, it was hard to see with both eyes open). The white stood out to me and immediitely I grabed the white coat. Finding it however was not the hard part, putting it on was. Having the dominant hand disabled via gloves and a stick in my middle finger spot, I had to work around it.

Second: Write a letter.

This task was more frightening before actually having to do the task. As I had taken a quick twirl, I noticed a bed side table, beside the bed in the room. Go figure the pen, envelope, and paper were all located were I thought they would be. I put the pen in my hand and held it like I would usually hold it. Sight was hard to see, but I hold my pencil much different then the average person, due to the fact I hold it between my pointer and middle finger to write. I tried it between my thumb and pointer as most people due and saw the problem. However I found a way around it. Folding it and putting it in the envelope was the hard part, well besides the vision.

Third: Setting a table

This task I ended up doing fourth due to I did not know where everything for the task was and saw a task that would have taken me second to complete. After finding all the equipment (well so I though), I set the table. Working at a bar/restaurant gave me excellent ability to set tables. I was supposed to set three sets, when there were only two spots to set. Vision was not a problem at this point and neither was the hand. As for my feet I did not even notice the feeling anymore.

Fourth: Folding all the towels and avoid other clothes.

This task was easy. I fold towel with only thumb and pointer and with my vision fine, I cruised through it. I almost matched and folded the socks as well.

Fifth: Drink a half cup of water

This task was by far the easiest. I simply grabed a cup I set prior on the table, went to the sink, filled it halfway with water, and drank all of it.

At the end I told my evaluator I was done and was aloud to take the equipment of. The noodles in my shoe felt wierd after taking them our of my shoe and the other equipment was just relieving to have off. Having my vision impaired, my touch taken away, and my hearing impaired was such a cool experiment. However, I ended up with side effects which include: nausea, headache, sick feeling, forgetfulness, sore eyes, "bubble" ears, and was still off put by loss of touch (via gloves and splint). I learned a lot about disability through this experiment.
