Pain is a common thing amongst people of all ages and is something most people want to relieve almost instantly when it occurs. Know Your Pain Treatment Options was an article written by Diana Rodriguez of Everyday Health and online website. This article was designed to give insight on options to pain management and relief. Diana Rodriguez even said, “ Whether your pain is from arthritis, cancer treatments, fibromyalgia, or an old injury, you need to find a way to get your pain under control.” This brings us to the first things you need to know. The doctor is someone who is there to help you in all different times of need. Well, pain management is something they can help you with. The first step is to go and see or even schedule an appointment with your doctor to see what is the cause of pain and what will be the most effective way to cure the problem, if possible. With there being many different types of relief as options, you can find the right process to help you. Before going in for treatment, Judith Scheman, told Rodriguez, "Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. I think that's extraordinarily important. When we focus only on the sensory aspect, we fail to appreciate the suffering component of the pain, which is important to recognize because pain is not what occurs at the periphery." As she did her studies and worked to find the different ways to manage pain she came to the realization and learned that a scale of pain is really different for everyone. Perception of pain is different for everyone. Though one might feel pain when standing in cold, windy weather, another might not feel the same way and even be perfectly warm. Things can change the way we view pain in everyday situations. Pain, fear, anxiety, and depression are some things to note when reviewing pain. Scheman even noted, “ What the brain perceives is indisputably modifiable by emotion.” Emotion has consistently been a factor in the management of pain for years. Someone in fear of snakes may have a harder time with the pain, then someone who has been around snakes and is completely comfortable with them. When talking with Scheman, Rodriguez noted that when dealing with pain, one should view it not only from the physical aspect, but the emotional aspect as well. In her research she has marked that though someone prefers to use a pain reliever to help, it is not the only method. Your doctor is your source of information on what is appropriate for you when you are trying to alleviate pain. "There are a lot of medications that are prescribed for pain," stated Scheman in her interview with Rodriguez. Tylenol, anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, and steroids are just something the article stated that were ways to relieve pain. Along with medication, therapies are another way that can help relieve pain. When exercises are not done correctly it can cause pain to worsen instead of getting better. Working on the pain in a therapeutic way can help the pain be tolerated and easier to deal with. Scheman gave a lot of insight on the many types of pain relievers. Some of the others mentioned were relaxation techniques, heat and cold therapies, massage, and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) therapy. Overall one quote stuck out the best from the information, "We aren't guaranteed lives without pain," says Scheman. I learned that pain can start to run your life or make it harder and these are problems we need to address and take care of.
