All you have to do is be near a cat for a certain amount of time. Most humans come in contact with the parasite by swallowing it after coming in contact with cat feces. T gondii is the cause of a disease called toxoplasmosis. The Center for Disease Control said there is over 60 million people in the world are infected with this disease. People with a health immune system can fight of the T gondii disease. Most pregnant women and people with weak immune systems can catch this disease very easy. Most people that get this have flu like symptoms. Some of the symptoms are muscle aches, pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Severe infection can cause blindness and even death. T gondii infection causes a higher chance of getting a mental illness. Dr. Robert H. Yolken, of the Stanley Laboratory of Developmental Neurovirology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, and colleagues assessed the results of two previous studies. These studies said that owning a cat in your childhood caused a higher chance of getting Schizophrenia. Ways not to get this disease from your cat is to feed them commercial cat foods or cooked meats. Uncooked meat can cause your cat to have the T gondii virus increase. In conclusion keep your immune system up, do not get pregnant while owning a cat, and feed your cats right.
