Scientists believe that embryonic stem cells can “someday…used to treat human diseases.” (Hansen 879) Embryonic stem cells are the only stem cells known to form all adult cell types. Embryonic stem cell are created when embryos are developed from an egg and then fertilized. The cells are usually donated by donors and are used for research by Scientists. The Scientist can take care of the cells for month to ensure that they develop the right way and form correctly. I was one the fence about this, but I have turned more to the pro side. This research can help many people. There are people out there that have many of problems they can not help. In this research they want to form the cells to maybe help the people with life altering diseases or conditions. My position in this pro vs. con debate is pro. A lot of people are con and I think that we need to help those with disabilities. This research can open up a new world for the new generation and show that we can help those in need. Those people with problems do not stand alone and can be helped. In this paper I would like to give reason for people to go pro for Embryonic stem cell research. The topics I will talk about in this paper is the diseases and condition it could help, the scientist point of view, and overall why I am pro. First of all most scientist are for Embryonic stem cell research. They believe that they can form these cells to help diseases, mental conditions, and even injuries. I personal want to be a Medical Scientist, so it makes sense I would be one the scientist side. I have always wanted to help people and create cures for those that need them, but this is not about me. Scientists want to harness these cells and potentially provide cells for those impaired or deformed cells. They can take the embryonic stem cells and form them to work as other cells. One example is pancreatic stem cell can be formed to possibly help type one diabetes. Scientists are taking time to understand how to develop these cells. They are also trying to find all of the concerns and problems they might have. The many concern at the moment is that they can have unwanted tumor problems. The transplanted cells can cause tumors to form within the newly planted cells. Scientists are trying to eliminate any tumorigenic cells that are there either before or after the transplant cell surgery. Overall the scientists hope to find an easy balance to create these cells and transplant them without any problems. There are a lot of diseases and conditions Embryonic stem cells transplants can help. First of all embryonic stem cell research can help people with many types of cancer. Scientists will be able the take the cells and reform them into cells of the same type, to reform an organ. They can take out a liver, pancreas and many other organs that are infested with cancer cells and provide new cells that can make a hole new organ. The thought of regrowing an organ is amazing. This is something that could save very many lives. Personally I would love to help in this process. Cancer runs in my family heavily. Everyone at one time or another will get it. My closest cousin Marie had ovarian cancer two or three times. Another thing that this research can help is heart disease of many kinds. The stem cells can be formed into new blood vessels. The blood vessel carries blood through tissues and organs. Which overall can help blood flow in the body. The cells will be formed as arteries, capillaries, and veins inside the blood vessel. The final thing I will talk about helping is spinal cord injury. A spinal cord injury is damage to any part of the spinal cord. They can take these cells and form them to be able to fix damage within the spinal cord and or in the nerves at the end of the spinal canal. Spinal cord injury often causes changes in strength, and loss of feeling in any part below the part injured. They can hopefully bring movement back to the deadend nerve or injured area. The reason I went pro for embryonic stem cell research is this is a process that can help people with many forms of diseases, conditions, or injuries. The debate is mainly between those in the scientific community and those of a very religious community. I seen and heard both sides and that is why I am writing from my point of view. My mother is very against it and always said “Well the embryo does not get the chance to say whether they are willing to give their cells or not.” She believes that it is disrespectful to destroy the human body at such an early stage of life (embryo). Yes, in terms she is kind of right, but most, if not all of the embryo’s were dead when given for research. They are embryo’s that have not life or formation to them yet. I think that they are not doing direct harm to a baby like those on the con side. I would never support this if I thought that it would not help. I have always been someone to help if there is someone in need. This in terms could help to improve the lives of people in our society. I am very young and still in school, but one day I would love to become a Medical Scientist and help people on the con side understand this process. One day we will be able to harness this process and help all those babies, children, and even adults that are suffering from problem they could not help. Let us stand up and take charge to help those who need help and bring purpose to the embryo’s taken before life begins. I say all those embryo’s are baby angels because they can help whether they became life or not. They protect life of those who did come through the womb. And we need to educate people on this process.
In conclusion embryonic stem cell research can bring happiness to those with life altering conditions, injuries, and many diseases. Scientist are researching a safe way to grow these cells and form them to help these many conditions. I personally would one day love to stand behind these scientist and help to create these cells. Lastly in my opinion those who disagree and or are on the con side of this political debate should become educated to understand this science. These are reasons I am pro for stem cell research.
